While trading blows, you can throw the punch, but it is your opponent's choice on whether he takes the hit or not.
IE: [Superkid aimed a punch at the Fredster's jaw...] And now it's Fredster's decision if he gets hit.
He can choose to avoid it or take it.
But should you be faced with one of those inevitable hits, one where neither your own capabilities or your own ability as a hero/villain can avoid, then you HAVE to take it.
If your character has been wounded beyond belief (or his/her abilities), or is in a situation where there is no escape from certain death, then your person is most likely dead (unless someone else comes in and saves the day).
If you're not certain whether or not you're dead, or if you feel that someone is cheating, contact a moderator or me, the Admin, in Reports to Staff.
